Course Details

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

BASICS

Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editing software that can manipulate images to aid in communicating visually. Students will learn how to navigate the interface of the software to work with layers, selection tools, color adjustments, et cetera, to manipulate and enhance images.

ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR

BASICS

Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editing software that can draw and manipulate vector images to create illustrations, logos and typefaces. Students will learn how to navigate the interface of the software to work with shapes, colours and lines, pen-tool, typography treatment, pattern-making, et-cetera to create vector compositions.

INTERFACE DESIGN & INTERACTIVITY

Interface Design is the design for machines and software, such as computers, home appliances, mobile devices and other electronic devices, with the focus on maximizing usability. The goal of user interface design is to make users’ interaction as simple and efficient as possible. This module introduces the principles behind the design of an interactive system.

USER EXPERIENCE STUDIO

The module aims to inculcate to the learner basic ethnographic methods and designing, planning and conduction user research. This module focuses on equipping students with the introduction of Design Thinking principles of Ideation, Prototyping, Evaluation and Testing. Students will learn to identify touchpoints in a user/customer journey.

ANTHROPOLOGICAL STUDIES

Anthropological Studies is an introduction to the study of humans through inquiring and observation of their behaviours and social relations in their milieus. Students will develop qualitative research techniques and observational skills to describe, analyse and interpret human activities through fieldwork and documentation

MOBILE APP DESIGN

Mobile App Design is different from ‘desktop’ app design not only in terms of the limited amount of screen pixels to work with but also in terms of physical interaction, moving from keyboard and mouse to touchscreen. As such, designing for mobile will require rethinking and adaptation of familiar design principles to this ‘new’ medium

HISTORY OF DIGITAL MEDIA DESIGN

The advent of digital media offers designers unprecedented access to a broad array of new tools and medium which are often technology-driven. Understanding the evolution of these technologies from the inception will afford designers insights into ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ technologies become interwoven with design in their represent form and open up possibilities for the future and now.

DATA VISUALISATION

Students will gain the understanding to use statistical analysis to organise and turn raw data into information for different sets of audiences, gathering and finding data, defining and manipulating data-sets and using cartography (map-making), statistical analysis and visual design skills to transform information into compelling narratives and information graphics

WAYFINDING

Wayfinding is understanding the role of design in the field of environmental and architecture work and in the design and implementation of navigational systems for both virtual and physical spaces. This module focuses on equipping students with the knowledge of universal signage systems. Students will learn to manipulate information and graphics to form a system of signs. They will learn how to use way-finding in different contexts, from websites to museum exhibitions. Students will also learn the technique known as map-making

PORTFOLIO DESIGN

Putting together a portfolio is crucial to showcase a curated body of works. Portfolio design presents the strengths and direction of a designer to prospective employers and clients. Students will be guided on the consideration required to package their individual portfolios based on their strengths, works and/or direction.

THE BUSINESS OF DESIGN

The Business of Design helps students understand the industry requirements and demands from their clients and employers and the working relationship with various types of suppliers. Students will gain an insight on the processes in the business of design and serve as an introduction on industry practices, the role of a design professional and how they function as a strategic asset to companies. Students will learn presentation techniques, networking, identifying target markets and client management.
